Story on Washington TV Station about AFL dog transfers to the DC area!

Fox Channel 5 in Washington had a story, April 28, 2010, about the 20 dogs that AFL is tranferring to the new DC Animal Shelter. (Several of the facts they stated were inaccurate, but that's ok.)

Included in the lucky travellers was the dog I rescued 6+ months ago and very very sadly had to hand over (Desert Dog is persnickity and the big puppy was too much for her old bones!). Rocky Cuervo (aka "Enar") is featured in the middle of the story (the only brindle colored dog in the story), shown happily wagging his tail. I found him on the street in Salmiya at 2 am, sniffing around in garbage and sand. (He's on some of my previous posts.)

I am so glad that some of the animals have happy endings. Out of all adversity come blessings.

Keep up the good work, AFL!

Hi DesertGirl :),
Ive been a silent reader of your blog for awhile, love ur sense of humor and useful info on Kuwait. Me and my husband r going to b moving there the end of this year so ur insights r priceless. Just wanted to ask you if there r stores selling quality cat and dog food there? I like to buy the natural and high protein food for my pets here in the states and would hate to have to feed them low quality stuff. Would really appreciate anu info. Enjoy ur time in the States :) Take Care! Jana

Hi Jana and thanks for the compliments! Yes, there are stores that sell quality feed, but the stocking is inconsistent. Generally in Kuwait, you'll find Pedigree brand. If you don't see what you want, the Sultan Center has a service (called "Just Ask") that will allow you to order through them for a fee of 5KD (around $16)per order (I think it is the same price if you group items). The International Vet Hospital sells a variety of food (www.ivh.com). I have never seen organic pet food sold here.

Here is PetSmart's (which we don't have in Kuwait) list of food brands:

21st Century
Alpo
Authority
AvoDerm Natural
Bil-Jac
By Nature
Castor & Pollux
Ceasar
Chef Michael's
Eukanuba
Iams
Just Born
Mixables
Nature's Recipe
Nutri-Vet
Nutro Max
Nutro Natural Choice
Nutro Ultra
Pedigree
Pet Ag
Pet Botanics
Pro Plan
Purina
Purina ONE
Royal Canin
Science Diet

Out of this list, we have Alpo, Pedigree, Purina, and occasionally Eukanuba and Iams.

Kuwait also imports cat/dogfood from Europe which would be under other brand names.

... but the good news is that you will probably have plenty of free time to cook your cat/dogs food with recipes online!

I hope this helps and if you have any questions at all about Kuwait - big or small - write to me at amerab@gmail.com and I'll try to help.

Thanks alot for your help! I guess it's going to be a change for us and the pets alike :))
I've read that cooking for them is actually a very healthy alternative, so maybe it's a good thing.
Thanks again, have a great week!

Wow! This is so wierd! We almost adopted Enar :) We ended up getting a smaller dog since we live in a pretty small apartment but he was SO sweet! I'm glad to see that he made it out safely. We would love to find out if Murphy made it okay, but no one could tell us. We fell in love with him also and were so sad that we couldn't take him home. They do such great things, AFL.. it was so sad what happened. Anyway.. thought it was quite a coincidence running across your blog! Thank you for sharing this video!

Don't get me wrong, I love AFL, but they are a PITA when it comes to information. People CARE. They want to KNOW what happens to animals. They aren't just randomly dumping them - they are taking the time and the caring to take them to an animal shelter and they want to KNOW WHAT HAPPENS TO THEM. Is that too much to ask?

I think it is rather selfish for them to come out with statements like, "Dont' make us relive the fire by asking about particular animals." What about the public (the same public that is funding the shelter with donations) who have a heart too?

I donate - I WANT TO KNOW.
